Nature Therapy
Nature therapy or nature assisted therapy has become increasingly sought and utilized modality for promoting and restoring wellness. Also referred to as ecotherapy, forest bathing or shinrin-yoku are all terms to describe engaging with nature to promote wellness.
Spending time in nature can be a restorative mindfulness experience as we incorporate sensory integration within nature. In our busy, hectic and often chaotic life, it can be nearly impossible to “quiet our minds” and “focus” in order to practice mindfulness strategies. By allowing nature to be our focus, as we turn our minds to the song of the birds, the smell of the pine or flowers, the warmth of the sun or wispy breeze, often we give our brains the opportunity to slow, focus and appreciate the present.
Over the past 30 years, there has been increasing interest and studies on the impact of nature and health outcomes. Studies have demonstrated that spending time in nature can:
-
Strengthen the immune system
-
Decrease heart rate, blood pressure and blood sugar
-
Decrease stress
-
Decrease anxiety and depression
-
Improve attention and cognition
-
Foster a sense of well-being
Studies have further demonstrated that the optimal "nature dose" is 120 minutes or 2 hours per week in intervals lasting at least 20 minutes.
A helpful tool to keep track of your time in nature is the NatureDose app.
